On Capitol Hill
The Month of August
Congress takes a summer break, returning September 8.
Down the Pike in '08?
The strongest contender for passage this year is a bill that would expand coverage of the American with Disabilities Act, HR 3195 (NYT & Reuters).
Congress gave up on tacking a hate crime bill, HR 1592, that would have covered crimes against gays, onto its year-end defense authorization bill (NYT).
The House has also voted to extend anti-discrimination protections at work to gays and lesbians (HR 3685), but the Senate probably won't follow up until next year (NYT). Moves to shield journalists from having to rat on their sources may also make some headway in '08. (WP, NYT & WP)
